Srinagar | Jagran News Desk: Senior Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday resigned from the All Party Hurriyat Conference, saying that he has decided to "distance himself completely" from the separatist platform.

In his letter to the All Party Hurriyat Conference, the 90-year-old senior separatist leader said that from now on, he will not be answerable in "any manner about the future conduct of the constituent members of the platform".

"He has written a detailed letter to Hurriyat members in which he said, given the present situation within the Hurriyat Conference, he is completely dissociating himself from the platform," Geelani said in a statement, as reported by news agency IANS.

Geelani's resignation from the All Party Hurriyat Conference is major development in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir, whose special status was ended by the central government on August 5 last year. Apart from abrogating Article 370, the Centre had also bifurcated the state into two union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

According to a report by news agency PTI, Geelani, who is one of the most noted separatist leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, has cited "rebellion against the leadership" by cadres as one of the biggest reason for his resignation.

Meanwhile, a NDTV report has claimed that Geelani had been facing criticism from groups in Pakistan "for his failure to respond to the government".

Geelani had been spearheading the separatist movement in the Kashmir Valley since the eruption of militancy in 1990. However, the 90-year-old separatist has been largely under house arrest since the summer agitation of 2010.

Geelani is a three-time MLA and has won from the Sopore constituency in 1972, 1977 and 1987. He, however, renounced electoral politics following the eruption of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. He was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir but founded his own party Tehreek-e-Hurriyat later.
